Forging technology breakthrough of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge super project

— Weforging provides core fastening solutions for Century Engineering

Introduction: Steel backbone across Lingdingyang

Δ  The 55-kilometer-long Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge was officially opened to traffic on Oct 24, 2018, setting several world records as one of the “seven wonders of the modern world”. Behind the spectacular bridge are countless cutting-edge technologies, including the special locking nut system provided by Weforging and the large nuts embedded at the fixed end of the undersea tunnel, which become the key supports to ensure the design life of the bridge for 120 years.

First, the ultimate challenge of the century project

1.1 Harsh Marine environment test

Δ  High salt and high humidity corrosion:

the annual average salinity of the Lingdingyang Sea area reaches 3.4%, which is 1.5 times that of ordinary sea water

Δ  Typhoon impact: Maximum Category 16 typhoon equivalent load of 5,000 tons (equivalent to the weight of the Eiffel Tower)

Δ  Ship collision risk: need to withstand the collision energy of 300,000-ton freighter

1.2 World-class technical standards

British BS+ Chinese GB double standard:

Δ Lock nuts must meet the highest grades of BS 3692 Grade 10.9 and GB/T 3098.2
Δ 120 years maintenance free requirements: all metal corrosion rate should be < 0.01mm/ year
Δ Nanometer size control: The installation accuracy of embedded parts is ±0.05mm

2. Technical answers for Weforging

2.1 Forging revolution of deep-sea fixed end large nuts

Material innovation:

Δ High strength corrosion resistant special alloy steel (add Cu/Cr/Ni composite elements)
Tensile strength ≥1040MPa

2.2 Nut system that never loosens

Double thread locking structure:

♥ 30° wedge oblique thread +60° bearing thread composite design
Vibration test: 1 million cycles preload loss < 5%
2.3 Lifecycle Monitoring:100% inspection
Each nut is laser imprinted with a unique ID code
2.4 Performance Verification:
Salt spray test > 10000 hours (ASTM B117 standard)
-40℃~150℃ temperature cycle test
Stress corrosion threshold KISCC≥35MPa·m¹/²

Third, the highlight of the bridge construction

2.1 Forging revolution of deep-sea fixed end large nuts

Immersed tube tunnel docking in 2016:

The 368 sets of embedded nuts used in the E15 sinking tube achieve ±2mm butt accuracy at 45 meters underwater

2017 Typhoon resistance verification:

During Typhoon “Hato”, the whole bridge fasteners failed zero

Conclusion:

Weforging used its space-grade manufacturing technology and Marine engineering experience to provide more than 150,000 key fasteners and forging lugs for this superproject
